			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;m sure it&#8217;s already evident that we&#8217;ve made massive structural changes in the weekly PracticeTIP.  Gone are the columns and all the pictures and links in our attempt to make this newsletter more useable and readable than ever before.  We, of course, always appreciate your feedback so bring it on!</p>
<p>Additionally, we&#8217;ve discontinued the Monthly MarketPlace Newsletter.  The classified ads and the service offerings will soon be present on a blog page on my website.  For more details, please stay tuned. As soon as the page is done, we&#8217;ll announce it.</p>
<p>Why all the changes?  Well, simply, we&#8217;ve instituted the changes and the dropping of the MarketPlace as a separate email in order to give you more timely and appropriate practice useful information in a way that makes the most sense for all of us.  I don&#8217;t like wading through long, wordy newsletters and I know you don&#8217;t either.</p>
<p>Another significant change is in the use of anchors and tags to take you instantly to the items of interest or sub-topics within the PracticeTIP that you may be of greatest interest and importance to you.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s an example of how that will work&#8230;if you knew that clicking on anything highlighted in the body of the <a href="http://drstevehoffman.com/blog/?post=713a#1">PracticeTIP</a> would take you to an area of interest, then you can skip right to where you wanted to go. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The CDC (Center for Disease Control) has recently forecast that obesity rates will grow from 36% today to a disturbing 42% of the US population by 2030.  Those most likely to become obese are in the 45-64 age group.</p>
<p>While I&#8217;m not a weight loss expert and I don&#8217;t expect you to be one either, we all have to recognize the impact obesity will have on the economy and the health of both individuals and the country.  Chiropractic is chiropractic and I wouldn&#8217;t want it to be anything else.  At the same time, we must keep our public conscious about how to use our service to move their health toward an ideal and that requires them (and us) to look at lifestyle.</p>
<p>There are lots of weight loss programs out there and, whether you elect to add one to your practice or not, here are three tips to help you and your public in choosing the best weight loss program.</p>
<p><strong>Choose a program that matches your lifestyle.</strong><br />
If you’re busy/on the go, look for a structured program like meal replacement.  If you’re more of an information seeker, choose a program that provides healthy menu choices and recipe options. Finding an approach that connects with your lifestyle can help you with making early progress and sticking with it.</p>
<p><strong>Focus on real food and nutrition.</strong><br />
Perhaps the best option is one that reconnects you with  healthy, nutritious food.  Focusing on lean protein, fresh veggies and fruits, lots of water and moderate carbs can help you rebuild positive eating habits that will help you drop the pounds and keep them off.</p>
<p><strong>Get support and information.</strong><br />
Get support&#8230;whether to get questions answered or to share the journey, you’ll want to call the company, the coach or the distributor to make sure you get a fast, friendly response. While online tools are great, nothing beats the personal touch, especially when you hit a plateau or a bump along the way.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Because of the critical nature of this  topic, we have spent an exhaustive amount of time looking at common  contradictions and making suggestions for their resolution.  In the  process, we have had many readers react to the  information with the equivalent of &#8220;ignorance is bliss&#8221; and many more  acknowledge the contribution to their lives.  We have also received a  number of personal requests for contradiction resolution and will  respond to them in this week&#8217;s PracticeTIP.  While not a complete list,  these are representative of the email&#8217;s I&#8217;ve received.</p>

<p>Let&#8217;s get it started&#8230;</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Beyond symptom  relief my recommendations are a shot in the dark.  How can I know how  long they can hold their adjustment?  I want to promote regular care and  not just symptom relief. I&#8217;m stuck and frustrated not owning my  recommendations.</p>
<p>There are actually a few contradictions  here.  Before I address how long they can go before they &#8220;need&#8221; another  adjustment, let&#8217;s look at the concept of &#8220;holding&#8221; an adjustment.  Love  to get away from the concept of holding since if we&#8217;re holding, we&#8217;re  static or stuck and that&#8217;s the one place I would not want the human body  to be.  Can we simply find the people simply do or do not need an  adjustment.</p>
<p>Next, if you never see anyone &#8220;not  needing&#8221; an adjustment, its impossible to reduce their schedule so this  becomes a technic dependent issue.  For me, within an MC2 framework, if  someone presents two visits in a row not needing an adjustment, I am  happy to reduce their schedule.  And, if they show up two visits in a  row needing the same thing done to them, I would see them more often  until that pattern cleared.  You will own your recommendations when they  are built on a sound framework and not just what ever we have always  done.  For more about MC2, visit:  <strong><a href="http://www.mc2technic.com/" target="_blank">http://www.mc2technic.com/</a></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: center;">A corollary question to the one  above is, &#8220;I lack certainty in my recommendations so how can my practice  members have certainty in them?&#8221;</p>
<p>Astute observation since  certainty is both the name of the game and what your practice members  are buying from you.  This certainty grows when your experience is based  on observation and alteration rather than the common cookie-cutter  approach that most use in practice.  However, instead of a static set of  recommendations, why not a completely different approach as outlined in  my first response?  What if the recommendations were daily until you  came in two visits in a row not needing an adjustment&#8230;etc.  Then,  ultimately you must decide what the least visit frequency becomes.  For  us, this was set at 2 weeks based on a late 1980&#8242;s study by Videman.   Want a copy?  Email me and request it:  <a title="VidemanStudy" href="mailto:drsteve@drstevehoffman.com" target="_blank"><strong>drsteve@drstevehoffman.com</strong></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;">&#8220;My two biggest contradictions are not getting adjusted enough myself and not seeing my family often enough.&#8221;</p>
<p>This was a very common theme in the email I  received so, if its all about energy and you recognize that the  greatest value you have for other people is your own health and  well-being&#8230;then you shoot to the top of the priority list.  Become the  ideal practice member that you want others to be in your practice.   This is one of the prime motivators for docs to sponsor an MC2  Technical Certainty seminar in their city&#8230;so that both they and their  chiropractor can be delivering the kind of quality that they themselves  wish to deliver to their patients.</p>
<p>As far as your family is  concerned&#8230;what&#8217;s past is past.  Take a new approach starting today.   Re-exams for all family members with new recommendations following this  sequence of reasons (which I will elaborate on more next week)&#8230;</p>
<ul>
<li> Explain why the change</li>
<li>Explain what you will do</li>
<li>Explain how they will benefit</li>
<li>Explain the timeline before their next re-evaluation</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;">&#8220;I notice with a  lot of Chiropractors that I talk to that they adjust to &#8220;remove&#8221; or  &#8220;eliminate&#8221; Subluxations or &#8220;treat&#8221; Subluxation&#8221;</p>
<p>The writer then corrected this himself and stated,<br />
&#8220;this is allopathic in nature as you are  trying to get rid of sometime or something has gone wrong  vs. a more  vitalistic view of a subluxation is not a physical thing but a &#8220;state of  being&#8221;&#8230; a perfect adaptation, albeit resulting in a state of  decreased function, so we Adjust the Person/Body to allow for normal  function, thus being in a less subluxated state of being.&#8221;  This  is, of course, spot on.  Balance is a state of grace where the body is  in it&#8217;s best position to function, heal and resist dysfunction.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We will conclude this series next week when I answer and make suggestions to many of you who have taken the time to ask me about contradictions.</p>
<p>As we conclude this series on contradictions, I just would like to point out that it is really all about energy&#8230;your energy.  Are your actions in conflict with your beliefs?  If so, they deplete your energy.  Are your actions consistent with your beliefs?  Then, they add to your energy.  Simply put, energy is either an expense or an investment and the elimination of contradictions helps you invest in you.</p>
<p>Simple test&#8230;</p>
<p>Feeling depleted?  Look for contradictions!<br />
Feeling energized?  You&#8217;re on purpose!</p>
<p>OK-let&#8217;s finish the original list of common issues:</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Do you adjust your own family during &#8220;prime time&#8221; in your office?</strong><br />
That&#8217;s when you do your best work&#8230;isn&#8217;t it?  Whose health, other than perhaps your own, is your highest priority?  In my mind, it&#8217;s your family and your team so do they get short shrift somewhere along the line or do they get your best when you&#8217;re at your best?  Think about it and how much would it add to your credibility both with your family and your practice members to see your most loved ones getting the care you recommend to others.</p>
<p><strong>When was the last time YOU were checked?</strong><br />
You knew it was going to eventually come to this right?  How can you recommend regular care and regular re-evaluations to your practice members when you yourself are not getting that standard of care?  Do what I say and not what I do is a classic contradiction.  And, the greatest value you have for those you love and those you serve is your own health and well being&#8230;so get with the program.  I also strongly recommend you get the kind of care you give.  Indeed, this is one of the primary motivators for docs to host an MC2 seminar&#8230;so that they can learn and embrace the technic and have another doc in their community that can give them great care too. <p><strong>Are you, your family and your team in the office on a regular care program including re-evaluations?</strong><br />
Now that we&#8217;ve discussed seeing your family and your team during prime time and how important it is for you to get what you give&#8230;simply answer the following questions:</p>
<ol>
<li>Why is this important?</li>
<li>What am I going to do?</li>
<li>How will we all benefit?</li>
<li>When will we verify the improvement?</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Do you love the patients and hate the business?</strong><br />
This is where we ultimately get to the heart of the matter for many of you.  Please, please, please realize that the business is the vehicle that makes the practice possible.  Separate out and understand the purpose of the practice is to get more life into more people through chiropractic.  The purpose of the business is to fund your lifestyle.  Unless your life and lifestyle is something that contributes to, rather than detracts from, your ability to serve your people&#8230;you are living in contradiction. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Would you encourage a child to paint with all the colors of the rainbow or would you insist that red flowers are red and green leaves are green&#8230;and that&#8217;s the way they&#8217;ve always been seen&#8230;and there&#8217;s no reason to see them any other way?</p>
<p>I am astonished at how many docs do not want to look at, acknowledge, face or do something about the contradictions in their lives even when those contradictions are holding them back from being, doing and having what they say they want.</p>
<p>Why are contradictions an issue?  Granted, they are more of an issue when it is realized that they exist but, in reality, they are an issue because they deplete, rather than contribute to, our energy and personal power.</p>
<p>That said, for those of you willing to go where you&#8217;ve never gone before&#8230;let&#8217;s look at and let me suggest ways of dealing with, common contradictions:</p>
<p>OK-onwards and upwards with the clearing of contradictions:</p>
<p>Are you taking regular conscious steps to grow your own health?</p>
<p>Most health inducing actions, behaviors and lifestyles add to one&#8217;s level of energy and that level of energy contributes to one&#8217;s success in business, practice, life and health.  Indeed, don&#8217;t you often hear from practice members how they have more energy since seeing you?  Sure, you&#8217;ve added life to their body and so they have more energy.  And, if they make healthy lifestyle choices, they will further add to their energy rather than deplete it.  Now, what about you?  How can we expect our patients to follow our advice if we don&#8217;t follow it ourselves?</p>
<p>Do you teach that the body is a self-healing and self-regulating organism that is constantly adapting while adjusting the same segments over and over and over again?</p>
<p>This is the topic that actually produces the most upset and discomfort so let&#8217;s face it head on.  No one doubts your ability to find and adjust subluxations.  The question is, &#8220;why do you have to adjust the same ones over and over and over?&#8221;  And often the answer is, &#8220;because they show up over and over and over again.&#8221;  Got it but aren&#8217;t we supposed to be doctors of cause?  If the same subluxations keep showing up, there are reasons.  One set of reasons is the patients life and lifestyle.  But the other set of reasons is that the nervous system learns and perhaps you&#8217;re teaching it that it needs the same thing done to it over and over and over again.  Unfortunately, that is called dependency so why not find a way to find your patients different every visit then to be satisfied that they are always the same?  This common issue is always addressed in the MC2 Technical Certainty seminar and DVD: <a href="http://mc2technic.com/"> http://mc2technic.com/</a></p>
<p>Do you call what you do &#8220;treatment?&#8221;<br />
Do you make &#8220;treatment&#8221; plans?<br />
Do you see people in &#8220;treatment&#8221; rooms?</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Do you realize treatment is a contradiction to lifetime and lifestyle chiropractic?</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">According to the American Heritage Medical dictionary, treatment is the administration or application of remedies to a patient or for a disease or injury;  medicinal or surgical management;  therapy.  And, at least in my mind, a treatment is an event and feeds the allopathic event for event mindset of the public.  If you ever want chiropractic to be seen as a lifestyle and if you ever want what you do to be seen as care then maybe some change is in order.</p>
<p>Do you call what you do &#8220;adjustment or care?&#8221;<br />
Do you make &#8220;care&#8221; plans?<br />
Do you see people in &#8220;adjustment&#8221; rooms?</p>

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">&#8220;I&#8217;m still working my way through the MC2 DVD&#8217;s and have started checking a few patients with the technique &#8211; so far so good. I&#8217;m exclusively activator and have started clearing upper cervicals first with everyone and I&#8217;m certainly adjusting less. &#8216;DO LESS DO DIFFERENT&#8217; Doing different is new to me but makes perfect sense and its working. I&#8217;ve never been taught torque before &#8211; in fact it has never been on my radar but I&#8217;m blown away by incorporating it into my pressure testing on activator checks. Thank You &#8211; another piece of the puzzle in place.&#8221;</span></p>
<p>Back to contradictions and this is certainly a hot topic as the drop outs and kudos continue.  Quoting Rand:</p>
<p><span style="color: #ff9900;">A contradiction cannot exist. An atom is itself, and so is the universe; neither can contradict its own identity; nor can a part contradict the whole. No concept man forms is valid unless he integrates it without contradiction into the total sum of his knowledge. To arrive at a contradiction is to confess an error in one’s thinking; to maintain a contradiction is to abdicate one’s mind and to evict oneself from the realm of reality.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">&#8220;Great practice tip. Having done your MC2 before, these are questions I asked and ended up changing my technique. Thank you for all that you do.&#8221;</span></p>
<p>Seems like a recurrent theme.  Indeed, we hear these kudos from MC2 docs all the time that the seminar is so much more than just a technique seminar.  Come join us in California the end of April.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s interesting is that in this past week I have had more people discontinuing their free pxtip service than I can ever remember AND I have, at the same time (thanks Dr. Cranfield and all the others sending positive reinforcement), received more kudos and requests for free subscriptions than I can ever remember.  The only thing I can conclude is that the current series on contradictions has struck a nerve.</p>
<p>I can only imagine that if you wish to pretend that contradictions do not exist in your life, business and practice and do not want to be confronted with them (the ignorance is bliss approach) then you have opted to go through life with your perception of the world distorted and compromised by your own belief system.</p>
<p>On the other hand, if you embrace change…if you embrace knowledge…if you want help finding and overcoming your contradictions, then I am providing a valuable service to you and that is my intention so let’s procede.</p>
<p>Together, let&#8217;s raise your business, practice and life to a new level&#8230;in less time, with less effort and by having more fun&#8230;all at the same time!</p>
<p>Do you educate about improved nerve system function with no way of demonstrating it?</p>
<p>Let me answer this one with the opposite.  Do you talk about the importance of the nervous system?  Do you want your practice members to understand and relate to the value of the nervous system in health and disease?  And then do you feel their bones, see how their bones move, take an xray to know the alignment of the bones and then MTFB (move the freakin bone)?  AND then have a hard time understanding why they think you&#8217;re a bone doctor?Demonstrate nerve system function with a functional exam to exam assessment (I strongly recommend and endorse the Subluxation Station from CLA) and a physiology based visit to visit assessment.  Again, here is where a technic assessment like MC2 becomes even more valuable&#8230;it is not contradictory as shown above.</p>
<p>Do you want a family wellness practice but do a &#8220;pain&#8221; based exam and consult?</p>
<p>What if you communicated WHY health problems tend to run in families and your practice members understood that all family members live in the same house, breathe the same air, eat the same food and are subject to the same internal family stresses?  And, what if they understood that health problems may run in families because patterns of nervous system stress tends to run in families (check out some of your own family scans and/or xrays) and because this is so common, your office has a policy of evaluating the stress on the enrve systems of all practice members children&#8230;.(BTW-this entire communication concept is taught in Mastery Coaching. <p>Do you a have a &#8220;target&#8221; market but cast as wide a net as possible?</p>
<p>Both do work but please decide what you want. What is a good target market for you and your practice? What would be even better?  What would be ideal?  In today&#8217;s marketplace, finding your ideal niche and scratching it is the best way to create community and grow your practice with ideal practice members. If you want more families&#8230;go after them&#8230;where would you find them?  What do you want more of?  If the answer is everything, then you&#8217;re not thinking of what YOU WANT MOST!  The days of a page long description of an ideal patient, while still workable, are behind us.  What lies ahead of us is specific targeting.  Example&#8230;my son specializes in athletes and performance and my daughter in moms and kids health development&#8230;.Their Ideal Practice Member is a yoga-Mom.</p>

<p><span style="color: #0000ff;">&#8220;I&#8217;ve been working through the MC2 DVD&#8217;s the past few days and have been blown away by the package.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;"> If truth be told on the first sitting I fast forwarded through DVD 1 trying to get to the &#8216;Technique&#8217; so that I could bring something to practice asap. Last night I worked through the full DVD 1 and I picked up so much that I wasn&#8217;t expecting in a technique lecture. So thank you.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;"> I&#8217;ve been an activator practitioner exclusively for the last 6 years and I explain everything to my patients from a neurological standpoint (nerve &#8211; muscle &#8211; bone) yet from watching the DVD there are many contradictions in my practice that I knew existed but didn&#8217;t know what they were or how to address them.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;"> I&#8217;m looking forward to sitting down with my wife (she&#8217;s also a chiro) and working our way through these DVD&#8217;s and making all the necessary changes in order to be congruent with our message and practice &#8216;innately&#8217;.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #0000ff;"> I&#8217;ll keep you posted on our progress and challenges but for now thanks again.&#8221;</span></p>
<p>So, before we even begin with this series, let me suggest a vehicle to help you find and address some of these contradictions within your practice is by studying MC2 &#8211; Mastering Chiropractic with Certainty!</p>
<p>Now back to the series&#8230;let&#8217;s briefly address these one at a time so that you can raise your business, practice and life to a new level&#8230;in less time, with less effort and by having more fun&#8230;all at the same time!</p>
<p>How do I know if someone is subluxated?</p>
<p>To properly answer this question, you first must clearly define subluxation.  And, while we do this in MC2, you must decide what the sequencing is.  If it is simply a bone out of place, then x-ray is a pretty good tool to know if someone is subluxated&#8230;but you wouldn&#8217;t x-ray someone every visit so we rely on palpation and motion palpation but these tell you bony aberrations but not neurological consequences.  Then, there&#8217;s leg check but do you pre and post check practice members every visit?  Bottom line:  without a definitive way of determining if someone is subluxated, you have no way of deciding if an adjustment should be rendered and, quite frankly&#8230;unless you post-check, you have little way of knowing whether an adjustment had been rendered.  I&#8217;m sure you can see the tangle here.  While I clearly have my methods and protocols and love the INSIGHT SUBLUXATION STATION as an exam to exam vehicle, tell me what you do and I&#8217;ll share it with our readers. <p>How do I know if someone needs an adjustment today?</p>
<p>This is really a sub-question to the last one.  But, another way of asking it would be, &#8220;have you ever had a patient come to the office and NOT demonstrate a need to be adjusted?&#8221;  Based on your answer to this question, you may have some real issues with the next question which is&#8230;</p>
<p>How do I know when to change a practice member&#8217;s visit schedule?</p>
<p>If they &#8220;NEED&#8221; an adjustment every time they come to the office, then why would you ever reduce their visit frequency?  If you don&#8217;t want patients to judge their care on how they feel, how are you judging the care you render?  If the nervous system learns, what are you teaching it?  There is an additional portion to this question which is, &#8220;are you also adjusting the same things over and over and over again?&#8221;  If you are, then aren&#8217;t you making that nervous system dependent on having the same thing done to it?  Is that what you&#8217;re trying to accomplish&#8230;dependency?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Having just recently returned from Total Solution (my 90th Program by the way), I am more finely attuned to contradictions and how the level of contradiction is consistent with the level of destruction.</p>
<p>Or, in a more practical way, how your practice can only grow to the level of the contradictions you see and resolve.</p>
<p>Contradictions are like subluxations that prevent you from achieving your true potential.</p>
<p>So, step one is to be able to see the contradictions.</p>
<p>Step two is to decide to resolve the contradiction by either by eliminating the contradiction or by accepting the contradiction and the consequences of not resolving it.</p>
<p>One example we like to use is how calling medicine health care when its really sick care leads to more sickness rather than more health.</p>
<p>With that in mind, if you want more of what you want instead of more of what you have, let&#8217;s look at some common practical contradictions.</p>
<p>Here are some of the most obvious contradictions I see:</p>
<ol>
<li>How do I know if someone is subluxated?</li>
<li>How do I know if someone needs an adjustment today?</li>
<li>How do I know when to change a practice member&#8217;s visit schedule?</li>
<li>Do you educate about improved nerve system function with no way of demonstrating it?</li>
<li>Do you want a family wellness practice but do a &#8220;pain&#8221; based exam and consult?</li>
<li>Do you a have a &#8220;target&#8221; market but cast as wide a new as possible?</li>

<li>Are you taking regular conscious steps to grow your own health?</li>
<li>Do you teach that the body is a self-healing and self-regulating organism that is constantly adapting while adjusting the same segments over and over and over again?</li>
